“if
you want to know about Change, first look at rivers” uses the flow of
liquid through a network of interconnected vessels, valves and pistons in order
to map and corelate the Energy required for Change, with the conditions
that make it possible.


With
direct references to early water-based analog computers, this device operates as a visualizer of the disposition in
infrastructure systems to seek equilibrium and low energy states. From personal
to societal, Change, is determined by the groundwork it is carried over.
Through its operation from the audience, the work seeks to create a working
example of individual and collective agency in enacting change and stirring the
course of the future; it highlights that energy and effort are and need be
understood as accumulative, as practices with continuity and lineage.

The work “abjurer↔nowhere, terra↔green” is a cipher like safe-box with a 7 letter, reconfigurable password. Through its transparency, the puzzle lays bare its otherwise, concealed inner workings and as such, reveals the potential to decipher it. This re-configuration of the sequence of operations where knowledge of the code previously held a singular, uttermost importance, is now substituted with meticulous observation and attention; the key is revealed rather than given or inherited. This process of deciphering functions like a reverse engineering of learning. By bringing to the foreground the mechanism that links our input action to the result, a different hierarchy emerges, one where the importance of holding on to information/memory and experience internally, does not guarantee its reliability. Even connecting the state of knowing, to objects and places outside our brain remains still susceptible to the eye of the beholder. The very feeling of familiarity of what we do know, can’t always be trusted.

The work “Sleeper soldier” is trying to sketch out a character whose presence persists, unlike the many passing residents of room 505. A chainmail armor on a ceremonial stand awaits its owner; or is recently taken off during an intimate moment of rest within the privacy of the room. Sleeper agents are intelligence operatives sent to locations with their sole objective to assimilate with the local community over a very long period.

Once their objective is given after many years, they will use their local networks to achieve it. The artist uses this character -of the lurking sleeper soldier- to highlight the dormant ideologies in the gaze of the visitor, the now omnipresent figure of the city. By challenging its motives the work is questioning the effects of their agency, seeking this way to unravel our own views on hospitality, service and identity. By entering then the

staged intimacy of their hotel room we encounter a hidden, maybe more honest nature of its occupant that may not fully fit in with that of a seemingly benevolent character. One that, just like the Datura flower depicted in their armour’s insignia, blooms / acts only at night or only in secret.

The work “Touch intermediaries” iterates on a 19th century multitool originally conceived as a kitchen utensil. This handheld contraption of which its use is less than obvious without any instructions, was designed to be the intermediary between user and object. An interface layer primarily to manage heat, resembling more a weapon than any familiar domestic implement. In its present iteration, the tool is made out of copper. The metal only second to silver in its ability to dissipate heat. The metal’s reaction to air creates a hostile surface for microorganisms to survive on. Copper’s antimicrobial qualities made it also the material of choice for tools to mediate touch during the covid19 pandemic; an additional level of protection towards a threat moving in an unrelatable microcosm.

“Conditions, engineered” is the second iteration of a series of interactive public sculptures. The work mimics the aesthetics and mechanics of exercise machines but requires two users to work in tandem in order to be functional, creating this way a condition of dependency between them. Within public space, this condition instigates brief moments of unexpected closeness, hinting towards new ways of perceiving ourselves and others within it.

The title of the work speaks also to the effort behind Sakiya. An expansive project dedicated to the intersection of art, science and agriculture outside Ramallah. A sort of -conditions engineering- to sustain and cultivate new imaginaries around our relationship with land, sustainability, cultural heritage and future commons that overcome the limitations of the current political boundaries.

School of equals was a 5 day workshop at Luca School of Art as well as a published collection of texts under the same name. As “Module for Temporary Infrastructures” our contribution examined the ideas of access and more specifically within large institutions of education. Alongside the participating students we looked at what conditions and infrastructures are required for transformation to be achievable within such institutions. As part of the range of exercises, we built a geodesic dome to host the collaborative work for the week but also to leave back a mobile infrastructure for holding space beyond the grounds and limitations of the school.

 dimensions variable&#38;nbsp;“i wanna be a rogue, hidden in the shadows, in support of [...]” is an installation and a video essay exploring the functions and features of infrastructure space. How can this space function as a medium for agency within community? How can its operating protocols be appropriated and mutated in order to imagine and create new, counter hegemonies? Through the use of collaboration methodologies as immaterial infrastructures and modular design as their material counterpart, I attempt to create a case study for their production, operation and implementation.
